Bible Verses for Gratitude in Hard Times

Gratitude in hard times is not about pretending things are fine. These verses show you what it actually looks like.

// the word for this moment

“In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.”

1 Thessalonians 5:18 (KJV)

More Scripture for finding gratitude in hard times

“Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls: Yet I will rejoice in the LORD.”

Habakkuk 3:17-18 (KJV)

“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

Philippians 4:6-7 (KJV)

What this means for you

1 Thessalonians 5:18 says in every thing, not for every thing — the difference matters. It isn't asking you to be grateful for hard things as if they were good. It's asking you to bring gratitude into every thing, the same way you bring God into every thing. Gratitude in hard times isn't denial. It's choosing not to let the hard thing become the only thing you can see.

A prayer for this moment

Lord, I want to be genuinely grateful and not just performing it. Help me find the real things in this season — however small — that are still good, still evidence of Your hand. I'm not asking You to help me pretend this is easy. I'm asking You to help me see clearly enough that difficult isn't all there is. Let thanksgiving open something in me that mere positive thinking can't. Amen.
