Bible Verses for Estranged Family

Family estrangement carries a grief that doesn't fit neatly into any category. These verses don't rush you to resolution.

// the word for this moment

“If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.”

Romans 12:18 (KJV)

More Scripture for estrangement from family

“When my father and my mother forsake me, then the LORD will take me up.”

Psalm 27:10 (KJV)

“Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.”

Matthew 5:9 (KJV)

What this means for you

Romans 12:18 has a phrase that's easy to miss — if it be possible. Scripture doesn't pretend that peace is always achievable from one side, no matter how hard you try. The instruction is to do what lies in you — not to fix what isn't in your control. Psalm 27:10 speaks even more directly into complete abandonment by family: even then, the Lord takes you in. Your worth is not determined by your family's willingness to be in relationship with you.

A prayer for this moment

Lord, this estrangement is heavy, and I carry it differently than other people can see. Help me do what lies in me — the part that's actually mine to do — and release what isn't. If reconciliation is possible, lead me toward it wisely and safely. If it isn't, hold me in the grief of that without letting it define me. Amen.
