Bible Verses for the Death of a Spouse

Losing a spouse is losing the person who knew you longest. These verses are for that particular, enormous grief.

// the word for this moment

“The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.”

Psalm 34:18 (KJV)

More Scripture for the death of a spouse

“For thy Maker is thine husband; the LORD of hosts is his name; and thy Redeemer the Holy One of Israel; The God of the whole earth shall he be called.”

Isaiah 54:5 (KJV)

“And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.”

Revelation 21:4 (KJV)

What this means for you

The Lord is near to the broken-hearted — not near eventually, not near after you've processed this enough. Near now, in the specific brokenness of losing the person you built your life with. Isaiah 54:5 is addressed to widows by name, and it doesn't offer a replacement for what was lost. It offers presence — the God of the whole earth, staying close.

A prayer for this moment

Lord, the house is quiet in a way I was not prepared for. I don't know how to do this, and I don't want to do it without You near. Stay close to this broken heart. Meet me in the ordinary, empty moments — the meals alone, the side of the bed that no one's on. Let me feel You near, even when I can't feel much of anything. Amen.
