In 2 Timothy 4:10, Paul writes; "For Demas has forsaken me, having loved this present world, and has departed for Thessalonica—Crescens for Galatia, Titus for Dalmatia." Demas here was Paul's partner in ministry; a co-worker in the vineyard. Paul was imprisoned for the Gospel and facing execution at the time he wrote this letter. His closest ministry ally at that time, Demas, saw that situation as an opportunity for him to abandon Paul. If the report was that Demas went about and continued preaching the gospel, that would have been a completely different case and understandable. But he stopped preaching, went back into the world to become like everyone else, stopped visiting Paul. I can literally feel how hurtful that could be for someone in Paul's situation. A heartbreaking betrayal. But this story also reveals many other loopholes in Demas' ministry. - His walk with God was shaky. I doubt if he ever had a functional relationship with God - He lacked the fear of God. He didn't fear the Jesus he preached (because this wasn't just about Paul) - He wasn't totally submitted to God The entire scenario also reveals human frailty. People can change on you in a split second, God knows this. The disciples deserted Jesus. It takes so much for God to trust a man. _Jesus replied, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.”_ - Luke 9:62 This exactly was what Demas did. Persecution arose in the course of preaching the Gospel, and he abandoned everything. That's the same way many Believers are today. If the cares of this world and zeal for making money in greater than your zeal for God, it's better to just be a full-time business man/woman or civil servant. Not one leg in God and one leg in the world. God requires total commitment from His servants. Crescens left for Galatia, Titus for Dalmatia to continue preaching the Gospel. Only Demas opted to fail God. So here's the question: Can God trust you with His work?
